According to AP Writer Ali Akbar Dareini police clashed with thousands of protesters in central Tehran today. Apparently Iranian security forces beat protesters and fired tear gas at them in an attempt to quell the demonstrators who were hoping to do the same thing as Egypt popular revolt against their unpopular president.
Dareini reported that the demonstrators were calling for solidarity with Egypt’s revolt. This was the first show of force by the Iranian opposition in more than a year. As the police used tear gas against the crowds they responded by setting fires in trash cans to protect themselves from the stinging tear gas.
Eyewitnesses reported that at least three protesters were injured by bullets while others were treated for wounds that resulted from beatings.
The protesters were heard chanting “An Iranian dies but doesn’t accept humiliation” and Death to the dictator (President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad)
Opposition website kaleme.com reported similar rallies in the central city of Isfahan.
